In reading works on a topic as ubiquitous as “the witch,” where she’s represented in a multitude of cultures, sometimes under a different moniker, often not, the commonalities one witch shares with her sisters of lore and reality across the sea never fail to surprise me. In my insatiable search for books about witches, I’ve become fascinated by the many shapes the witch takes in fiction, and the intersections of thought about what it means to be a witch. We read about the wicked witch of fairy tale, and then perhaps the teen witch who bumbles with newfound power, and then the mysterious but alluring adult witch. There’s a reason there are so many books about witches, many more than the 100 in this list. She is the healer, the medicine woman, the bruja, the Mother, the crafty Instagrammer. GAME PLAY: Players move around the game area in a clockwise direction. Then, someone chants “One, two, three, four, JFK!” and all other players yell “FDR!” at which point everyone runs to the center table, grabs a beer and picks the nearest object to stand on. The Castle is in the middle of the zones. You must use these objects to traverse the zones without stepping in the lava. There is a trail of chairs, cushions, tables, etc through the zones. There are four zones and an alternate zone is a “crazy” zone. The Pawns are lined up in four lines radiating outward from the King. The beers are Pawns which are the Soldiers of the Secret Order. The bottle of liquor is the king of the castle. The castle is made up of cans of beer and a bottle of liquor. You are teamed up with anyone that is holding up one less finger as you. To pick teams, everyone holds up a random number of fingers against their foreheads. Season 1 it was played in Normal, in Season 2 it was played in Cooler, Season 3 it was played in Mars Landing, Season 5 in Wedding Eve. True American has been played once in every season except season 4. True American is first seen in the episode Normal. The game is expanded to include stripping during the episode Cooler, and in Wedding Eve they play 'First Lady Edition' in honour of Cece, the bride. The rules of True American are very elaborate and complicated and never fully explained.
