A very, VERY different portrayal of Captain Hook a much more suave and youthful take on the character, yet at the same time less “gentlemanly.” Not too mention that, while, again, Hook has never been an unsympathetic character, this version made the formerly nefarious pirate of yore a dashing Robin Hood-esque figure (actually, since Robin is in this show, too.yeah, never mind that analogy) as the love interest of the main character, Emma Swan, this captain’s only problem is the bloody writers sometimes it feels like their going for Jack Sparrow, other times Will Turner, to make a Pirates of the Caribbean analogy. Although he isn't present in the show for that long, from this fact alone, it's easy to see why the scenes with Hook are, for many people, the single most memorable part(s) of the musical.ġ1. Without James Hook, James Barrie has no motivation to go on through his struggles without James Barrie, James Hook has no self control.

Hook is very similar, but with a deeper twist: Barrie is already very childish, as a person, and Hook represents his "inner pirate," the adult side of him he needs to accept. The id, in Freudian theory, is the part of the human mind that gives a person their primal drives - vicious, irritable, without a conscience or any control, and typically childish. Hook is depicted, if you wish to get Freudian, as Barrie's "id," but a sort of twisted take on it.

While the movie certainly has its back-and-forth moments between Barrie's "Neverland" in his mind and the immortal world he would create, the musical chooses to heighten those aspects farther. Barrie, the man who wrote Peter Pan, and his efforts to get the original stage show off the ground, as well as his relationship with the Llewelyn-Davies family, who inspired several characters in the book. This show is based on the film of the same name, and tells the story of J.M.

I'm not sure how much people currently love or hate this musical, but personally, I think it's pretty darn good! Currently (and originally, on Broadway) played by Frasier and Sideshow Bob himself, Kelsey Grammer, of all people (though veteran Javert, Terrence Mann, and veteran Phantom of the Opera, Anthony Warlow, have also donned the hat and hook a couple of times, while Grammer was taking a breather, so to speak), this version of Captain Hook takes a psychological bent. Kelsey Grammer, from Finding Neverland: The Musical Draw your cutlass, load your pistol, and take a slash at it!ġ2. It is also probably not too much of an exaggeration to say that more people actually CARE about Hook more than Peter himself even Barrie called him a “not wholly unheroic figure.” Many interpretations of the Peter Pan mythos have come and gone, and just about every one has presented their own take on the Captain of the Jolly Roger.but which versions were the best?Īs usual, to HECK with “best,” I have no idea! I just know what I like, and these are my Top 12 Favorite Portrayals of Captain Jas. Barrie’s timeless tale “Peter Pan” is - is the most influential and infamous of them all.

As a rather silly song goes, “There isn’t a boy who won’t enjoy a-workin’ for Captain Hook.” With the possible exception of Long John Silver from Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island,” it is probably not an exaggeration to say that of all the cutthroat buccaneers to sail their way through literature, Captain James Hook - the dark and sinister cavalier of J.M.
